Manhunt launched after eight detainees escape police holding cells

Eastern Cape police are on a massive post easter manhunt after eight detainees escaped from the holding cells of the Afsondering Police Station in Maluti on Saturday, 4 April 2026.

It has been confirmed by police that the escapees are considered dangerous and have warned members of the public not to approach them.

While the country was in easter mode, the eight were planning to escape the police cells and later be up for an easter egg hunt with police. How the escape took place is still unclear. Police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana said an investigation has been opened to determine whether the detainees received help from inside or outside the station.

“A case of escaping from lawful custody has been opened on eight counts, and a separate case of aiding and abetting is also being investigated,” Gantana said.

The eight escaped holding cells which seems they may have been awaiting further questioning or court appearances.

Escapees named as:

  • Asiphe Yawu
  • Abraham Gobozi
  • Kwanele Mzala
  • Siphelele Mkhulisi
  • Thabo Nana
  • Siphelele Nondolo
  • Anele Ludidi
  • Sinethemba Mazendala

Original charges have not yet been disclosed as police site ongoing investigation, however it has been confirmed the eight now face an additional charge of escaping from lawful custody.

Police have urged anyone who spots the escapees to refrain from confronting them.

“They are considered dangerous. Do not try to apprehend them yourself,” Brigadier Gantana said.

Instead, residents are asked to contact the investigating team immediately using the following numbers:

UPDATE| [07 April 2026] One of 8 escapees from Afsondering Police Station (Maluti) has been rearrested. Siphelele Mkhulisi was found asleep at his aunt’s home in Masakala Location and taken back into custody without incident. He was originally held for murder.
