Santaco Confirms Increase in taxi fares following a fuel hike from Wednesday

As fuel prices are scheduled to rise on Wednesday, South African commuters are bracing for an immediate ripple effect, with taxi fares expected to increase shortly thereafter. One association has warned that the cost of a single trip could jump by as much as R6.

The looming hike adds to the mounting pressure on passengers already grappling with fuel shortages, strict limits on refuelling volumes, and surging diesel prices across the country.

In response to these mounting operational costs, taxi associations and operators have confirmed they are being forced to adjust fares. The South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) acknowledged the uncertainty and growing anxiety among commuters who depend on minibus taxis for their daily travel.

Santaco expressed concern over the panic beginning to disrupt normal taxi operations. However, the council moved to reassure the public that any fare adjustments would be handled with careful consideration, emphasizing the vital role that affordable transport plays in everyday life and economic activity.

Commuters have been advised that all changes and increases will be communicated transparently—through official notices at taxi ranks, inside vehicles, and via verified association communication platforms.
