Shebeshxt’s third bail bid continues on medical grounds

Lehlohonolo ‘Shebeshxt’ Chauke, who has been held in custody since his arrest in November 2025, argues that he requires immediate surgery for injuries from a severe car crash in June 2024.

Health Concerns at the Forefront

During Tuesday’s hearing, the artist’s personal doctor, Dr Malose Chaba, told the court that Chauke urgently needs an Open Reduction Internal Fixation procedure on his leg. The doctor explained that a screw placed after the original accident has shifted, and postponing treatment could lead to intense pain and even leg deformity.

Dr Chaba added that Chauke’s initial injuries were serious, noting the artist’s extended hospital stay proved the severity: the bones were shattered and out of alignment. He also stated that during his last medical check on 11 November last year, he prescribed painkillers, but Chauke was arrested the following day.

Third Attempt to Secure Release

This is Chauke’s third application for bail, following two rejections. In December 2025, Senior Magistrate Godfrey Netshiozwi denied his first request, and the Polokwane High Court later dismissed his appeal, with Judge A.J. Burnett supporting the original ruling.

Chauke recently changed legal representation, now being represented by Attorney Michael Khumalo, who replaced his previous lawyer Lot Ramusi.

He is facing nine serious charges, including attempted murder, malicious damage to property, and unlawful possession of a firearm. Some of these relate to a shooting in Ladanna, Polokwane, in August 2024, where two individuals were shot and one was left in critical condition.

Emotional and Financial Impact

While testifying, the 31-year-old spoke about how his imprisonment has affected him personally and financially. He said he has lost performance bookings, harming his income, and some promoters have threatened legal action to recover deposits.

Chauke also shared that he was not present for the birth of his child, as his partner gave birth in December 2025 while he was behind bars. He also has an eight-year-old child in Gauteng whom he supports.

The State continues to oppose bail, arguing that releasing Chauke could jeopardise the criminal process and that the evidence against him is strong.

The court is expected to issue a ruling on the bail application once both sides have concluded their arguments.
