Fuel Shock Looming: Petrol Could Exceed R30, Diesel Over R41 in May
South African motorists may face yet another brutal fuel price hike in May, according to the latest data from the Central Energy Fund (CEF).
The grim forecast follows last week’s sharp increase in petrol prices, which already sent drivers rushing to fill up their tanks.
Sharp Increases Expected
Data released on 6 April shows that diesel prices could climb by more than R13 per litre, while petrol may rise by over R4.30 per litre.
The CEF’s under-recovery figures, the shortfall between international and local fuel prices, paint a troubling picture:
- Petrol: between R4.30 and R4.70 per litre
- Diesel: between R13.07 and R13.13 per litre
- Illuminating paraffin: R10.70 per litre
Temporary Relief in April
Earlier this month, the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy introduced a temporary R3 reduction on the fuel levy for April. Unless the department extends or adjusts this relief for May, the same reduction will apply, offering only minor respite from the steep increases.
Projected Pump Prices for May
Based on current CEF projections, without further market shifts or government intervention:
- 93 unleaded petrol: R30.35 per litre
- 95 unleaded petrol: R31.06 per litre
- Diesel 0.05% (500 ppm): R41.97 per litre (wholesale)
- Diesel 0.005% (50 ppm): R42.24 per litre (wholesale)
