Businessman Suleiman Carrim has reportedly suffered a heart attack

Businessman Suleiman Carrim Admitted to Hospital on Eve of Commission Testimony

North West businessman and African National Congress (ANC) regional treasurer Suleiman Carrim was admitted to a hospital in Johannesburg on Monday, 13 April 2026, following a medical emergency that has forced the postponement of his long-awaited appearance before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.

Carrim, 58, was expected to take the stand on Tuesday, 14 April 2026, to answer a series of allegations relating to state capture, corruption, and undue influence within the country’s law enforcement structures. However, his legal team confirmed in a brief statement that he was taken to a private medical facility after complaining of chest pains earlier in the day.

“Mr. Carrim is currently under observation. His doctors have advised that he will not be fit to travel or attend any proceedings for at least the next 48 hours,” the statement read. The commission has been notified of the development and is expected to rule on whether his testimony will be rescheduled.

Allegations Before the Madlanga Commission

The Madlanga Commission, established to investigate allegations of political interference and corruption within South Africa’s criminal justice system, has been examining Carrim’s business dealings for several months.

Among the key allegations against him are:

  • Financial links to alleged crime figures: Evidence leaders have alleged that Carrim facilitated questionable financial transactions on behalf of individuals with known links to organised crime, including payments routed through shell companies to obscure their origin.
  • Suspected money flows: Testimony previously heard by the commission suggested that Carrim may have acted as a financial conduit, moving funds between municipal accounts, private firms, and politically connected intermediaries. Investigators have pointed to a pattern of unusually large payments from struggling municipalities in the Ngaka Modiri Molema District to companies tied to Carrim.
  • Attempts to influence law enforcement: The commission has also received testimony alleging that Carrim sought to use his political position to delay or derail investigations into certain tenders. He has not yet responded publicly to these claims in detail.
  • Failure to disclose material information: Earlier preliminary hearings suggested that Carrim failed to disclose the full extent of certain payments received by his companies, which commissioners said raised “serious questions of transparency.”

Carrim has previously denied any wrongdoing through his legal representatives, stating that his business dealings were legitimate and that he was being unfairly implicated by association.

Next Steps

With Carrim now hospitalised, the Madlanga Commission is expected to issue a directive on whether to proceed with other witnesses or adjourn portions of the inquiry pending his recovery. Legal analysts say the commission may seek a medical report to determine how long the delay could last.

Neither Carrim’s family nor his legal team has provided further details on his condition at this time. The commission continues its hearings in Johannesburg, with further updates expected tomorrow morning.
