It’s men’s mental health awareness month- Are you aware?
The Republic of South Africa recognises the month of June as men’s mental health month, and we, at SAN24 are bringing it to your attention in the essence of the initiative. This month is dedicated to reminding you to check up on, and show up for the men in your life, and we are dedicated to keeping a citizenry that is not only informed, but also one that is compassionate and caring.
Purpose of the initiative
This initiative is a chance to stop and recognise the unique pressures that men in South Africa are faced with and the responsibilities that they carry alone as the providers, protectors, and leaders in their families and communities.
The purpose is to deconstruct the harmful ideology that “indoda ayikhali” (a man does not cry). An idea that is engrained in a man’s mind from childhood. A term that is fronted as a badge of strength and a sign of resilience, when in reality, it is a harmful social norm that limits emotional expression by gender and perpetuates dominant ideals of masculinity that equate vulnerability with weakness.
Statistically, men are less likely to seek mental health support because of stigmas supported by outdated social norms that are still prevalent in South Africa today. These norms isolate men from one another, from themselves, and the support systems catered to them. The situation is further compounded by economic pressures, systemic inequality, and intergenerational trauma. For Queer and Trans men, the path is complicated further by homophobia, marginalisation, and lack of tailored mental health resources.
And so, the key is in emotional literacy and the understanding of mental illnesses; the root causes, how to carefully address these issues, and where and how to receive support.

Mission statement:
Our mission is to unculture harmful beliefs about men and abuse, and re-culture society to see male vulnerability not as weakness, but as truth, worthy of healing and protection. We are committed to creating a world where men and boys feel safe to speak up, seek help, and be heard without stigma.
Vision Statement:
We envision a society where men are free to express pain, trauma, and vulnerability without fear of mockery or exclusion. A society where violence against men is taken seriously, and healing becomes a universal right.

How you can support as an individual
You can support the initiative by helping break the silence and stopping to ask the real question; “hey, how are you doing really”?
If a man chooses to open up, steer clear from judgement or hasty advice. Respond with empathy and affirmation. Create a safe space that says; “you are not alone”. A space that allows for vulnerability without weakness. A space that says; “let me help you lighten the load”.
This month of June, spread kindness, empathy, and awareness.
