General Mkhwanazi has issued stern warning to taxi operators
In a firm address delivered during a recent engagement with stakeholders, General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has issued a stern warning to taxi operators in the Maphumulo and Dukuza areas. Underscoring the urgent need for strict adherence to transport regulations and heightened accountability in security operations.
No lawlessness
Speaking with unmistakable resolve, the general made it clear that there would be no room for lawlessness within the transport sector. “If someone wants a lift, they take a car. If they want a taxi, they take a taxi. If they want a bus, they take a bus. Nobody tells them what to use,” he said, emphasizing the importance of commuter choice and the rejection of any form of coercion or route intimidation.
Mkhwanazi went on to outline the severe consequences awaiting those found in contravention of the law. “If I find a vehicle that has been blocked or regulations broken, I will hold the responsible person accountable. If it involves a security company, I will report it to the office, revoke that company’s license, and confiscate their firearms,” he warned.
His remarks signal a readiness to pursue the highest measures of enforcement, including the complete shutdown of businesses and associations that operate outside legal parameters.
Zero tolerance
“We will close down the company. If someone works for an association but doesn’t have a taxi, we will also shut down that association,” Mkhwanazi added. His statement comes as a reinforcement that no entity whether an individual operator, a security firm, or an organized association would be excluded from accountability. In a pointed closing remark, he cautioned, “If you want to see government power, you will see it soon.”
The general’s comments reflect a broader zero-tolerance approach to violations within the transport sector, reaffirming government’s commitment to ensuring public safety, enforcing regulatory compliance, and maintaining order.
Authorities have indicated that they are fully prepared to take decisive action against individuals and associations that fail to abide by the rules, signaling that intensified enforcement efforts are imminent.
